On Top of Ashes

Written by: Emily Inzero

We stood on top of piles and piles of ashes. The destruction from the devastation of the volcano explosion still remains a year later. They are still looking for bodies a year later. There are entire communities still struggling from the ashes a year later.

Only the rich and those in hotels were notified in time that the volcano was exploding. Those that lived in the poorer communities found out by the time it was too late.

The devastation is beyond any words. It was heartbreaking to see. Families were taken from those that were "lucky" enough to be out of town when it occurred. Those that were severely burned were flown to Mexico to receive care.

Where did all the people go after their community was destroyed? Many were left on the streets without homes. Some Daughters are helping to pay for families rent's in expensive parts of town. The government helped minimally when they built what we would consider low-end-one-room-camping cabins for entire families to live in. What we might consider living in for a weekend (if that), they have been staying in for an entire year. They are made of wood, so they can't even cook inside. Multiple children have to squeeze into a twin bed. Temporary housing has turned into long term living. Here is a photo of the shelter site.

The good news is that the Daughters of Charity are working on a project. They have the land, resources, and most of the funding to build 35 families permanent housing (below is a photo of the land). The only thing they are lacking is the communities support for the project. The neighbors, who are also Daughters and run an orphanage have a "not in my backyard" opinion on the project. They have a lot of power in the community, and now no one wants them to build on the land. They believe the families that will live in these houses will bring trouble. They are fighting the worldwide stereotype that the synonym for poor is bad. Please keep the families in your prayers, so they can have a chance to have a fresh start and build a new community.
